Lord George Carnarvon, 5th Earl of Carnarvon of Highclere Castle:  1866 -1923

As a playboy!

Carnarvon died of cancer of the throat in Cairo
 on 5th April 1923

How gay was the Valley of the Kings?

Howard Carter is "outed" as gay by the "Daily Telegraph" on 16 October 2016 - see alongside.

The society Author William Cross, FSA Scot goes further and asserts in several of his books on the Carnarvons that Howard Carter and Lord George Carnarvon were " an item". This is based on written evidence given to Cross within the Carnarvon family.

Howard Carter was a complicated and shy man, he was almost certainly autistic. Equally his patron, London George Carnarvon was difficult, arrogant and doomed to die prematurely after a life of reckless pleasure in his younger days,  and an addiction to drugs ( to stay off his self inflicted diseases) and tobacco.   Together they had a troubled friendship that spilled over into intimacy.

That aside, these two men, with monies provided by Almina, 5th Countess of Carnarvon and 14 years of digging discovered the great tomb of the boy King Tutankhamun, in 1922.

More details of the relationships in the Tutankhamun story  can be found in the book " Carnarvon,  Carter and Tutankhamun Revisited: The hidden truths and doomed relationships" See alongside and link below. Available direct from William Cross and on e bay and Amazon.
